The student guide to traveling responsibly

Travel has the power to change lives in amazing ways. That’s true for you, your students, and the people you encounter along the way. You can never really prepare for how those effects will take shape. But you can prepare to maximize each and every moment of your tour.

To get the most out of your experience and begin to understand what it means to be a citizen of the world, it’s important to remain respectful and open-minded to everyone and everything you encounter. With that idea in mind, we’ve created a set of guidelines for responsible travel that all teachers and students should follow. So, please read through the below carefully, then share the full, printable list with your students.

Traveling responsibly means:

1. Supporting local communities
2. Protecting the environment
3. Respecting wildlife

Teachers, go through the full, printable list with students before departure.

Supporting local communities

People and communities are the heart of every destination, breathing unique life into a place. By taking time to understand a new culture and by being thankful for its hospitality, you amplify the positive impacts of your adventure and forge deeper personal connections. All it takes is a little willingness to be curious.

Protecting the environment

It might look a little different in your destination, but the earth is the only home we’ve got no matter where you are. By taking care of the earth at home and abroad, we can keep traveling for years to come, and see everything it has to offer. Even the littlest things add up to make a significant difference.

Respecting wildlife

We’ve got fuzzy and furry (and slimy and scaly) neighbors everywhere we look. Actually seeing an animal with your own eyes is often a tour highlight, and we want to make sure our animal friends stick around to keep it that way for years to come.
